Рецензируемое издание позиционируется как продолжение сборника рефлексий антропологов о практике полевых заметок, опубликованного в 1990 году под названием «Fieldnotes: The Makings of Anthropology». У сборника 2016 года к тому же названию добавились новые элементы: приставка «e-» и «digital world».У него тот же редактор, американский антрополог Роджер Санжек (Roger Sanjek), к которому присоединился соредактор – Сюзан Тратнер (Susan W. Tratner), антрополог с опытом полевой работы в интернете.
