Работа Софьи Гавриловой «Russia’s Regional Museums: Representing and Misrepresenting Knowledge about Nature, History, and Society» представляет собой смелую попытку разрешить парадокс, перед которым оказывается каждый исследователь российского краеведения. С одной стороны, повсеместность этого явления, туманность его истоков и многообразие форм всякий раз побуждает исследователя испытать, «как глубока кроличья нора». С другой стороны, в качестве локального знания изучение краеведения предполагает учет местной специфики, погружение в детали локальной истории и географии.
